About Mila Hogabo

Mila Hogabo is a Swedish fine art photographer born in Bogotá, Colombia, and adopted to Sweden at seven months old. Her work transforms fear, pain, and vulnerability into images of overwhelming beauty and strength.

Mila lost her hearing gradually and became completely deaf at sixteen. The years of silence and isolation that followed shaped her artistic vision profoundly. Her camera became both shield and voice — a way to connect with a world that had grown distant.

“When I lost my hearing it really was like losing my world. I was 16. Suddenly I was alone in the world.”

Water is her strongest visual theme. Having nearly drowned twice as a child, she conquered her fear through the lens — first in bathtubs, then in pools, eventually in oceans and deep quarries. Beneath the surface lies her silent world.

“To photograph under water was about winning over my fear. There are few things that can stop me when I get the scent of a good picture.”

Her conceptual series — including “Silent World,” “Tending Your Garden,” and “Rusalka” — move between dark fairy tales and nightmares. Mythology, play, and the tension between fragility and strength run through every image.

Mila challenges the fashion industry’s beauty standards. Her models carry different body shapes, skin colors, ethnicities, and genders. They are never props — always co-creators.

“I want to bring other ideals into the fashion world. I want to display them in all their magnificent beauty and naturalness.”

Published in PhotoVogue, Kamera & Bild, Armoire Magazine, and Beautiful Bizarre. Exhibited in Milan. Finalist for the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2020.

Mila works alongside her husband Freddi, who serves as creative assistant and interpreter. Together they founded Hogabo Photography and an inclusive model agency dedicated to diverse beauty.
